Questions and answers
Zhuyin or Pinyin: which one will I learn?
Both. Zhuyin (Bopomofo, ㄅㄆㄇㄈ) is the phonetic system used in Taiwan's schools and dictionaries; Pinyin is the one most courses elsewhere use. The app teaches Zhuyin and can show Pinyin alongside.
Traditional or Simplified characters?
Traditional characters (繁體字) only, because that is what you read in Taiwan: on signs, on menus and in the MRT.
Is it free?
You can start for free: the first unit (Sounds & Tones), review, flashcards, the dictionary and My words cost nothing. A Pro subscription unlocks all units.
Do I need an Android phone?
No. The web app at woodpecker.tw/app runs in your browser, on a computer or a phone. On Android you can also install the app from Google Play.
Who is it for?
Adults who want to learn Mandarin as it is spoken in Taiwan (華語), for travel, work, study or family. Complete beginners are welcome.
